The Power of Words

Writer: Victoria GrattanVictoria Grattan

Words are often spoken, written, or seen. It is up to us to determine how we interpret the meanings behind them. I think one of the most powerful words in the world is HATE. It sounds vile does it not? I associate HATE with death, dislike, disdain, disgust, and so forth. Sometimes the meanings behind words get lost, change, or inflict pain. As people, we have to choose our words carefully as to not offend others. I know many people who have reservations about certain words, that have different meanings from you and I alone. So, I challenge you to have a simple conversation with a friend or loved one about words that easily offend them or traumatically affect them. Just imagine for a second, someone telling you they HATE you. What would be your initial reaction? Would you in turn hate that individual back, forgive them, argue, resent, or brush it off? All in all, words can affect a person’s psyche and how they perceive themselves in the world & interact with others.

Words affect how people communicate on a day to day basis, how they emote, how they interact at work, in public, and in private. So, before you speak…consider for a split second how will the power of my words affect the person I am speaking to. How will they perceive what is being spoken, what will they take away from this conversation, can I live with what I have spoken, or have regrets from my spoken words? I think we have to carefully choose our words with great meaning behind them, especially when communicating with our significant others, children, parents, colleagues, etcetera. One thing I challenge you to do next time you have a conversation with someone is listen to their words. What are they conveying to you? Are they asking for help? Are they being sincere? Do they need help? When we LISTEN, then we can begin to understand the Power of Words. Let me help you become a better & more effective communicator via Mentally Fit!
